Uganda should take advantage of expanded regional trading bloc

Meetings taking place in Kampala over the next few days have the potential of transforming Africa from an exporter of raw materials and an importer of manufactured goods and expensive services into a continent with a self-sufficient industrial base that also exports its surplus manufactured goods to the rest of the world.

The meetings bring together 23 states from three trading blocs—the East African Community (EAC), the Common Market for East and Southern Africa (Comesa) and the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) – under the mandate of the African Union (AU) as the first step towards taking integration beyond the existing regional economic communities.
